SANS Institute Training in Cardiff (for the first time) – Events: 30 Sep – 5 Oct 2019

SANS Institute supports the thriving Welsh cyber ecosystem by bringing world-leading cyber security training to Cardiff for the first time at the end of September.

They will be running a week-long Cardiff event to increase accessibility of SANS cyber security training for businesses and organisations that are part of the Cyber Wales Ecosystem.

The move recognises what has been a well-kept secret for several years – Wales has a thriving cyber ecosystem, with large companies like Airbus, Thales, BT, AML, and General Dynamics, and indeed SANS itself, choosing to locate either their European headquarters or significant cyber operations in and around South Wales. A number of cyber focused military units are also based in Wales, and the area around Newport is home to large government organisations such as Companies House, the Passport office, and the Office for National Statistics, with the DVLA further West in Swansea, all of which process vast quantities of UK citizens’ data and have a high level of responsibility to keep that data safe. These huge consumers of cyber have supported, and are being supported, by a vast network of cyber specialist SMEs.

Stephen Jones, SANS MD for the UK and Nordics, says: ‘All of this cyber activity in South Wales means that there is a significant need to develop cyber talent in the region and keep current the skills of those already working in the cyber industry in Wales. It’s a perfect time for us to launch SANS Cardiff, which will enable security professionals in the region to further develop their skills and knowledge, extending South Wales’ cyber threat capabilities.”

Sophie Howe, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, sums it up: “The world is changing rapidly and skills in cyber security will be vital for any organisation to consider itself fit for the future. Public bodies in Wales now have duties under the Future Generations Act to ensure that they are planning for the long term. Ensuring their own workforce is well equipped with the right skills for the future will be a key part of this, as well as recognising the opportunities to the wider economy that could be achieved by developing the capacity of Wales as a nation to meet the demand for these skills.”

SANS Cardiff will be running three courses:

SEC401: Security Essentials Bootcamp Style – Ross Bergman
SEC560: Network Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking – Adrien de Beaupre
FOR500: Windows Forensic Analysis – Mike Pilkington

For more information on the courses, please visit https://www.sans.org/event/cardiff-september-2019

Billington is a large Government cyber security summit, entering its 10th anniversary this year. The theme for this year is: “Reinventing Cybersecurity: Addressing Tomorrow’s Top Cyber Challenges”.

Pre-Billington DIT event in New York – Tuesday 4th September

Due to the increase in events put on by the Billington organiser, and the extended exhibiting period, DIT will run a one day program of events in New York on Tuesday 4th September before heading up to Washington.  We will still be involved in the extremely successful VIP reception at Billington.  If you are interested in the NY program please Peter Thompson – peter.thompson@trade.gov.uk.

Billington, Washington DC, 4/5th September

Below is some information around the Billington Cybersecurity event in Washington from the organisers.  There won’t be a DIT pavilion at the exhibition but there is a UK cyber zone where we will be present.  The cost of exhibiting is $5,000.  DIT will be supporting companies who attend/exhibit and have negotiated some relevant opportunities with the event organisers as outlined below.  DIT are not involved in the organisation of the exhibition so if you are interested in exhibiting or attending please contact the organiser directly – tkb@billingtoncybersecurity.com

[A message from the organiser] Dear Potential Exhibitor at the UK Cyber Innovation Zone:

To grow your cyber business in the U.S. public sector, the largest cyber marketplace in the world, you should seriously consider exhibiting at the 10th Annual Billington CyberSecurity Summit on 9/4-9/5.  This summit is the leading summit on cybersecurity in government and draws unprecedented decision-makers.

For the fifth year, the UK Cyber Innovation Zone will be held at this summit and we invite you to exhibit as part of this Zone and to attend this unique summit.

Here are five reasons why exhibiting would benefit you and your business:

1. The summit is where the cyber “who’s who” in the U.S. Federal cyber market convenes.  Senior leaders in government and at major systems integrators have gathered for 10 years.  Going on its fifth year, the British Embassy will host a reception at the conclusion of this summit allowing for unparalleled networking.

2. The summit is the most established event of its kind entering its milestone 10th year in the world’s largest cyber market in the region where the NSA, DOD, DHS, DOE are located at the epicenter of cybersecurity.

3. Billington will launch a Cyber Mindsharing Network consisting of one on ones from 9:00-11:30 am on September 4 before the launch of this summit.

3. The U.K.’s “special relationship” with the U.S. makes it the first, trusted area the U.S. government looks for partners.

4. The event includes an educational one hour breakout panel on 9/5 tailored to International businesses hoping to grow in the cyber US government market titled, “Building Your Cybersecurity Business in the U.S. Public Sector.”

5. Trusted relationships matter greatly in the US cyber market; and this is where relationships form.  The entire program will be in the same room as the 60K+ square foot exhibit hall so that exhibitors will hear the General Session dialogue.  Over 1000 attendees are expected, and over 40 media. Last year, nearly 800 attendees came to the event and nearly 40 media.

The full list of confirmed speakers are listed here.
The latest agenda is available here.

UK pavilion at Singapore International Cyber Week

Following on from the success of previous years, DIT will be hosting a UK pavilion at Singapore International Cyber Week this year. The flyer with further details is attached. There will also be a significant senior HMG delegation attending GovWare, the associated conference.

There will be space for 6-8 UK companies on the pavilion. If you would like to apply for one of these slots, please reply to this bulletin and request the application form. Then submit the application form to cyber@trade.gov.uk by Friday 26th July. We will select companies the following week, and inform all applicants as soon as possible.

If this would be of interest, please mention this to the organisers as part of your discussions, and let us know that you intend to attend so that we can support. We may also be able to offer invitations to the HMG reception to UK companies attending but not on the UK pavilion.

IAAC – Recruitment of New CEO

IAAC CEO, Nigel Jones, has sadly resigned with effect from October 2019. We are therefore seeking to recruit a new CEO. IAAC is currently at the beginning of a process of updating its role in the UK cyber security world to ensure that it can continue to contribute to making the UK a successful digital society and economy. Nigel has launched this update and, with his coming departure, we need someone who has the same energy and skills to take it forward, particularly since IAAC will be an important member of the planned UK Cyber Security Council.

The CEO role is very much part-time, averaging 4-5 days a month. It is remunerated but not hugely so, at £1,000 nett of national insurance per month. IAAC does not have any premises so the CEO works from home, with occasional travel to London and Chester for meetings and events.

We are seeking applications, in the form of a letter addressing the requirements of the role and a c.v., by 9 August. Applications should be sent by email to Emma Cowell (info@iaac.org.uk) and Roddy Hallifax (companysecretary@iaac.org.uk). We will shortlist the applications in August and expect to hold interviews in the first half of September. We plan to make the decision by 25 September and hope to be able to introduce the new CEO at the Cyber Leadership Forum in October.

If you are interested in this please reply to this bulletin and request the Job and Role Descriptions and application form. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Nigel (ceo@IAAC.ORG.UK) if you have questions about the job or Roddy (companysecretary@iaac.org.uk) if you have questions about the application and selection process.

IAAC Cyber Resilience Workshop 2 Report

The report from the IAAC second workshop on cyber resilience compliance eco-system, hosted by the University of Manchester on 3rd June 2019, is now available at: http://www.iaac.org.uk/cyber-resilience/

The workshop explored many of the fundamental elements at work in a potential cyber compliance eco-system.  These comprise ‘hard’ measures, such as law and regulations; ‘soft’ measures, such as norms and social pressure; and structural issues, such as usability and process design.   All of these are affected by environmental issues, such as corporate culture, which in turn sit in a wider network of relationships and dependencies. The workshop examined the nature of some of these relationships, for example in pushing and pulling forces toward cyber resilience goals, and how they affect the behaviours of people as individuals in organisations and communities.

Comments are always welcome to info@iaac.org.uk .

Next generation services Innovation Lab

Individuals can now apply to take part in a 3-day residential Innovation Lab on behalf of their organisation to develop responsible data access or sharing methods. Services including legal, accounting and insurance account for almost 80% of the UK economy. It is vital these services are future-proof, and technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics can help the sector become more efficient, productive and globally competitive.
Through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF), government is supporting industry and researchers to develop next generation services that can transform the UK’s services industry. UK Research and Innovation will invest up to £3.5 million to develop responsible data access and sharing methods in the accountancy, insurance and legal services sectors through a 3-day residential Innovation Lab that will explore the use of AI to strengthen the UK services sector.
