Department for International Trade: Cyber Security Export Team Newsletter: July 2019

Secretary of State appoints UK Cyber Security Ambassador
The Secretary of State, the Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox, has appointed Dr Henry Pearson as the new UK Cyber Security Ambassador. The post was originated by Conrad Prince in 2016, and focuses on working with UK cyber security companies who are looking to export their capabilities overseas, particularly to national Governments. In this role Dr Pearson will look to bridge the gap between UK companies and senior decision makers and help align international demand for cyber security solutions with an extensive UK supply chain to secure major contracts for UK companies. This work will mainly be focused in the Gulf and South-East Asia. Prior to his appointment, Dr Pearson worked for the National Cyber Security Centre as an HMG Cyber Advisor, providing support to governments abroad to develop their cyber security capability. His extensive career in cyber security has also included advising the Ministry of Defence and senior leadership roles in Detica Ltd, now BAE Applied Intelligence.
Cyber Security Industry Representatives
We are pleased to welcome Michael Powell to the role of Cyber Security Industry Representative for the North America region. Michael will be based in the Embassy in Washington DC but will be travelling throughout North America, using his cyber and commercial expertise to engage with buyers and identify opportunities for UK companies. Michael has over twelve years of experience defining, selling, delivering, and directing both managed and professional cyber security services to government and industry, most recently as an Account Director for New York-based company, MWR InfoSecurity.
We are also pleased to have nominated a Cyber Security Industry Representative for the Middle East region, who will be based in Dubai. We will formally announce the post holder in the coming weeks. We will shortly be recruiting for a Cyber Representative to South-East Asia, and are considering options for a Cyber Representative to India in the medium term. We will provide updates as this process continues.
Sector offers
We now have sector offers for most of our priority areas: government, finance, CNI, automotive, healthcare, and infrastructure. The offers look to provide a suggested framework of themes for an overseas event and a selection of relevant companies. The team is promoting the offers around our deployed network, and has delivered events around automotive, finance and CNI. We are also producing sector-specific marketing material for use with potential buyers abroad. If your company has expertise relevant to a particular sector of which the team may not be aware, please do contact us so we can include your capability in the offer.
Recent Events
RSA Conference, San Francisco, USA
In March we took 22 companies to the RSA exhibition in San Francisco. This was the largest cyber mission to RSA so far with 8 companies/organisations on the UK pavilion and 14 on the second track, who did not have a stand but benefitted from the DIT programme of events and introductions to buyers.  DIT teamed up with LORCA and Invest Northern Ireland, who were represented on the pavilion, with the common goal to showcase the UK offer and help our companies to export.  Feedback indicated that the second track was a great success and it will be repeated in 2020.
GISEC, Dubai, UAE, 1-3 April
The Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference (GISEC) was a hugely successful three-day conference attended by six UK companies. Our commercial objective for the event was to support the exporting ambitions of these six UK cyber security firms in the UAE by facilitating introductions to buyers at the UK pavilion. We had a complete programme for the mission which included a breakfast briefing that was well attended by cyber primes. The breakfast briefing included presentations by industry experts as well as sessions led by UK Export Finance, the UAE Embassy and a UAE based business consultancy. The mission has shown early signs of promise with reports of quality business leads for the companies exhibiting. Our hope is to return next year and to take advantage of the healthy network of stakeholders accrued over the last few years.
