Level 3 Apprenticeship Cyber Technician survey

Short notice deadline 19th July – sorry!

Over the last few months a group of industry representatives have been working with the Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) to develop a level 3 Apprenticeship for a Cyber Security Technician.  Our aim is to encourage people into the profession as early as possible.

The industry panel has now submitted the proposal to the IfA and the requirement level 3 Apprenticeship has been approved.  As part of the process there is now a two week wider industry consultation, which we would encourage you to be a part of.  By following the link below, you will be taken to a survey which details the proposed content of the Level 3 Apprenticeship.  We would like your views as to the relevance of it, the survey should not take too much of your time.  This consultation is important, the panel want to be sure we are providing a route into the profession that is both relevant to employers and Apprentices, we can only gain this assurance from you.

Billington DIT event in New York – 4/5th September

Billington is a large Government cyber security summit, entering its 10th anniversary this year. The theme for this year is: “Reinventing Cybersecurity: Addressing Tomorrow’s Top Cyber Challenges”.

Pre-Billington DIT event in New York – Tuesday 4th September

Due to the increase in events put on by the Billington organiser, and the extended exhibiting period, DIT will run a one day program of events in New York on Tuesday 4th September before heading up to Washington.  We will still be involved in the extremely successful VIP reception at Billington.  If you are interested in the NY program please Peter Thompson – peter.thompson@trade.gov.uk.

Below is some information around the Billington Cybersecurity event in Washington from the organisers.  There won’t be a DIT pavilion at the exhibition but there is a UK cyber zone where we will be present.  The cost of exhibiting is $5,000.  DIT will be supporting companies who attend/exhibit and have negotiated some relevant opportunities with the event organisers as outlined below.  DIT are not involved in the organisation of the exhibition so if you are interested in exhibiting or attending please contact the organiser directly – tkb@billingtoncybersecurity.com

UK pavilion at Singapore International Cyber Week

Following on from the success of previous years, DIT will be hosting a UK pavilion at Singapore International Cyber Week this year. The flyer with further details is attached. There will also be a significant senior HMG delegation attending GovWare, the associated conference.

There will be space for 6-8 UK companies on the pavilion. If you would like to apply for one of these slots, please reply to this bulletin and request the application form. Then submit the application form to cyber@trade.gov.uk by Friday 26th July. We will select companies the following week, and inform all applicants as soon as possible.

Companies can also have their own stands at the exhibition. We have asked the organisers to give any UK companies with their own stands the option of being located near the UK pavilion. If this would be of interest, please mention this to the organisers as part of your discussions, and let us know that you intend to attend so that we can support. We may also be able to offer invitations to the HMG reception to UK companies attending but not on the UK pavilion.

IAAC – Recruitment of New CEO

IAAC CEO, Nigel Jones, has sadly resigned with effect from October 2019. We are therefore seeking to recruit a new CEO. IAAC is currently at the beginning of a process of updating its role in the UK cyber security world to ensure that it can continue to contribute to making the UK a successful digital society and economy. Nigel has launched this update and, with his coming departure, we need someone who has the same energy and skills to take it forward, particularly since IAAC will be an important member of the planned UK Cyber Security Council.

The CEO role is very much part-time, averaging 4-5 days a month. It is remunerated but not hugely so, at £1,000 nett of national insurance per month. IAAC does not have any premises so the CEO works from home, with occasional travel to London and Chester for meetings and events.

We are seeking applications, in the form of a letter addressing the requirements of the role and a c.v., by 9 August. Applications should be sent by email to Emma Cowell (info@iaac.org.uk) and Roddy Hallifax (companysecretary@iaac.org.uk). We will shortlist the applications in August and expect to hold interviews in the first half of September. We plan to make the decision by 25 September and hope to be able to introduce the new CEO at the Cyber Leadership Forum in October.

IAAC Cyber Resilience Workshop 2 Report

The report from the IAAC second workshop on cyber resilience compliance eco-system, hosted by the University of Manchester on 3rd June 2019, is now available at: http://www.iaac.org.uk/cyber-resilience/

The workshop explored many of the fundamental elements at work in a potential cyber compliance eco-system.  These comprise ‘hard’ measures, such as law and regulations; ‘soft’ measures, such as norms and social pressure; and structural issues, such as usability and process design.   All of these are affected by environmental issues, such as corporate culture, which in turn sit in a wider network of relationships and dependencies. The workshop examined the nature of some of these relationships, for example in pushing and pulling forces toward cyber resilience goals, and how they affect the behaviours of people as individuals in organisations and communities.

Next generation services Innovation Lab

Individuals can now apply to take part in a 3-day residential Innovation Lab on behalf of their organisation to develop responsible data access or sharing methods. Services including legal, accounting and insurance account for almost 80% of the UK economy. It is vital these services are future-proof, and technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics can help the sector become more efficient, productive and globally competitive.
Through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF), government is supporting industry and researchers to develop next generation services that can transform the UK’s services industry. UK Research and Innovation will invest up to £3.5 million to develop responsible data access and sharing methods in the accountancy, insurance and legal services sectors through a 3-day residential Innovation Lab that will explore the use of AI to strengthen the UK services sector.

Japan FinTech & Cyber Trade Mission, 3-6 September

Applications for the FinTech/Cyber trade mission to Japan are now open. The mission will coincide with FIN/SUM, the Japanese FinTech Summit in Tokyo, and will include opportunities for cyber security companies. QITCOM, 29 October – 1 November

QITCOM is an international conference and exhibition organised by the Qatari Ministry of Transport and Communications. This year’s event will feature a host of international speakers, 300 technology exhibitors, 100 start-ups and many other ecosystem enablers. The British Embassy in Doha and DIT in London are working to secure a UK pavilion and attract UK representatives across tech, cyber and academia to exhibit and showcase at QITCOM this year.The theme for 2019 will be Safe Smart Cities. CEBIT Australia, 29-31 October

DIT is seeking 10 highly innovative UK technology companies, including cyber security companies, to attend Australia’s largest tech festival. ANZ Airport Mission, w/c 11 November

Cyber security companies with an offer applicable to the airport sector are invited to join a mission to Australia and New Zealand, visiting key airport stakeholders in Auckland, Melbourne, and Sydney. Cyber Insurance

The City of London Corporation have published a report on the UK cyber insurance sector, which was launched by the Lord Mayor of London last month. The report is available here.

National Cyber Security Strategy after 2021

HMG is in the process of developing the next National Cyber Security Strategy, to succeed the existing 2016-2021 programme. As part of this, RUSI are running a series of workshops to identify industry’s views, and have published a briefing paper summarising their early findings. The briefing paper is available here.
