European Cyber Week – Rennes – 19 November 2018

As a territory at the cutting edge of cyber defense and cyber security, Brittany welcomed the 3rd edition of the European Cyber Week, from November 19th to 22th 2018.

At this European event, organised in Rennes by the ‘Pôle d’Excellence Cyber‘ and its partners, the programme included technical conferences, business meetings and high-level events, addressing civilian and military stakes, around the thematic of Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security, and its applications in the area of health, media and defense.  Members of Cyber Wales met with representatives of the Pôle d’Excellence Cyber at the St David’s Day event in Brussels back in March and planning for this return visit began then.

Cyber Wales representative Dr Kerry Beynon, European data privacy expert, partner at RDP Law, joined an impressive group of panelists for a main stage discussion titled “From Silicon Valley to Start up Nation: which opportunities for European Valleys?”.

Fellow panelists included Laurent de Mercey the Directorate-General for Regional & Urban Policy at the European Commission, Bertrand Piechaczyk the Engineering Unit Director from Bretagne Développement Innovation, José Calvo Territory Director for the Salamanca Institute in Castilla y León, Javier Barriocanal the Head of the Basque Cybersecurity Center and Jarno Salonen the Director of the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Welsh Government Trade & Invest teams including Neil Sandford from Wales and Ruth Stockley from the EU office in Brussels worked hard to organise for a Trade Mission of Welsh businesses to attend the event and all the delegates were able to capitalise on how well Kerry positioned Cyber Wales and it’s role on the Global stage.
