Launch of Women in Cyber Cluster – Newport – 18 September 2018

Another Cyber Security Cluster has been formed under the umbrella of Cyber Wales.

Clare Johnson, Head of Cyber Security in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering & Science at the University of South Wales launched the Women in Cyber Cluster at the University’s City Campus in Newport on Tuesday afternoon.

Clare heads up the team who run the National Cyber Security Academy, a BSc (Hons) Applied Cyber Security degree course where students work directly on ‘live briefs’ from industry, so their training will stay relevant and address current issues and topics. This hands-on approach also enables students to gain industry contacts and understand what will be expected of them in the workplace when they graduate.

The Academy punches above its weight when it comes to female to male students as well as staff and Clare is keen to make this precedent the “norm” in an industry still predominantly populated by men.

The meetings provide a valuable way for women working, or hoping to work, in the cyber industry to meet and support each other.

Speakers are organised for each of the monthly meetings, but most importantly there is always plenty of opportunity to chat, share ideas and provide advice for each other in this dynamic industry.
